Homemade Ashwagandha Gummies: My Batch Turned to Sludge!
Hey all! So I decided to ditch the store-bought ashwagandha gummies and make my own at home. I used agar agar with some ashwagandha powder and a bit of honey. Followed a recipe I found online, but they came out super slimy and didn't set. They're like a gooey mess. Any tips on what I did wrong? Should I use gelatin instead? I'm not vegan, so that's fine. Also, how much powder do you actually need for a decent dose?
Hey! I'm in med school and we actually just covered some of this. Agar agar is a bit tricky because it sets differently than gelatin. It needs to be boiled for a minute or two to activate, and then it sets at room temp, but it can get rubbery or slimy if you don't get the ratio right. For ashwagandha, the root powder is pretty dense and can mess with the gelling. I'd suggest using a liquid extract instead. Also, make sure you're not using too much acid (lemon juice) as that can break down the gelling. Gelatin is more forgiving, but if you want to stick with agar, try using a bit more and simmer for 5 minutes. Hope that helps!
Bro, I feel your pain. I tried making my own pre-workout gummies with caffeine and it was a disaster. The trick is to bloom the gelatin in cold water first for like 10 minutes. That's key if you go the gelatin route. Also, for the ashwagandha, I'd recommend getting a powder extract that's more concentrated, so you don't need as much and it won't affect the texture as much. Or just say screw it and buy the gummies, they're not that expensive and they taste better honestly. But if you're set on homemade, let me know, I can share my recipe that worked.
I tried making some keto gummies with ashwagandha and used gelatin. I think the issue might be that you added too much water. The recipe I use calls for 1/2 cup of water, 2 tablespoons of gelatin, and then I add the powder. Mix it well, put it in the fridge for at least 2 hours. They come out great. Also, if they're slimy, might be undercooked agar. But yeah, gelatin is the way to go for home gummies. And as for dosage, I use about 500mg per gummy, but you can adjust based on your tolerance. Let us know how it goes!
Thanks for all the tips, guys! I think I'll try the gelatin method next time. I'm going to use a concentrated extract too, that makes sense. I also might have not boiled the agar enough. I'll give it another shot and update you all. Appreciate the help!
