THREAD: DIY Gummy B12 Disaster - Help! My homemade vitamins turned into rubber bricksStarted by YogaYara980

Hey everyone! So I've been trying to make my own B12 gummies at home - wanted something natural without all the additives. I used grass-fed gelatin, some organic B12 powder I got online, and a bit of honey for sweetness. Mixed everything like the tutorials said, poured into molds... but they came out SO rubbery! Like, chewing on erasers level. Anyone have tips for better texture? Maybe I overheated the gelatin? Would love to hear from fellow DIY-ers!

Yara, I feel your pain! Tried this last month after my CrossFit coach recommended B12 for energy. My first batch was exactly like yours - total rubber bricks. Here's what worked for me: use WAY less gelatin than recipes say. Like, cut it by 1/3. Also, add a tiny bit of citric acid (like from lemon juice) - helps with texture AND makes them taste better. Pro tip: don't boil the mixture, just warm it enough to dissolve everything. Oh, and make sure your B12 powder is fully dissolved before adding gelatin!

Interesting project! Have you considered agar agar instead of gelatin? It's plant-based and might give you more consistent results. I actually built a small temperature-controlled heating pad for my gummy experiments - maintains exactly 160°F which is perfect for gelatin without denaturing the B12 (heat can degrade it!). Also, what's your B12 source? Methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin? The type matters for stability in homemade mixes. Might want to invest in a cheap pH meter too - optimal gummy texture happens around pH 3.5-4.0.

Thanks Kevin and Hacker! Kevin - cutting the gelatin sounds smart, I was following a 1:4 ratio with liquid. Hacker - I'm using methylcobalamin powder from a reputable brand. The temperature control idea is cool but maybe overkill for my kitchen haha. I do have agar from my vegan baking experiments though! Question: if I switch to agar, do I need to adjust the B12 amount? Worried about potency since I'm making these for my morning yoga energy boost.

Stick with gelatin IMO - better bioavailability with fats (I add a tsp of MCT oil to mine now). Yara, try this: 1 cup juice (I use tart cherry), 3 tbsp gelatin (not 4!), 1/2 tsp citric acid, your B12 dose, sweetener to taste. Heat juice to just steaming, whisk in gelatin OFF heat, then add everything else. Pour quick before it sets! Works every time for my pre-workout gummies. And hey, if they're still too firm... just chop them up and add to smoothies! #WasteNot
