My biotin gummies turned dark & hard... still safe??
So I bought a big bottle of biotin gummies like 4 months ago and kinda forgot about them. Found them today and they're all stuck together and super hard, plus they look darker than I remember. Is this normal? Can I still eat them or am I gonna die lol. They're from a decent brand btw, not expired until next year.
Hey! This is actually super common with gummies, especially biotin ones because they're often made with fruit pectin and natural colors. They can absorb moisture and then dry out, causing them to harden and darken. As long as there's no mold (fuzzy stuff) or weird smell, they're probably fine. But honestly, if they're that hard, I'd toss them. Your body might not absorb them properly anyway. Also, biotin can interfere with lab tests, so keep that in mind if you're getting bloodwork soon.
I'm a granola parent and we go through a lot of gummies. Color change and hardness are usually just oxidation and moisture loss. Sugar bloom looks like white spots, that's fine too. But if they're sticky and then hard, it's just the gelatin/pectin doing its thing. I'd say if they smell like vitamins (kinda weird anyway) and not like rotten fruit, you're good. But my rule is: when in doubt, throw it out. Not worth the stomach ache. Also, keep them in the fridge next time to prevent sticking.
Thanks guys. No mold or funky smell, just hard and dark. I'll probably just chuck them since they're a pain to chew anyway. Guess I'll stick to capsules from now on. Appreciate the help!
