New study on collagen gummies - legit or just hype?
Hey all, I came across this recent study (PMID: 34567890) about collagen peptides and skin elasticity. It was a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, which is rare for supplements. But it was funded by a supplement company. What do you guys think? Is it legit or biased? I'm skeptical but also curious since I'm in the market for a collagen gummy. TIA!
I wouldn't trust it. Big supplement companies fund studies to get the results they want. Plus, collagen is often sourced from animal parts, so it's not vegan. If you're looking for skin benefits, maybe try a plant-based alternative like silica or vitamin C? Just my two cents.
I've been giving my kids collagen gummies (after checking with our pediatrician) for their joints, and I swear they help. But I'm always wary of industry-funded studies. Maybe look for independent research? Also, make sure the gummies don't have artificial colors or sweeteners. We like the ones from that brand that uses tapioca syrup.
Thanks, Oliver and Lily. I did notice the funding source, which raised a flag. But the methodology seemed solid. I'll try to find independent studies. And Lily, good point about additives. I'll check the labels. Anyone else have thoughts?
Just to add: even if the study is well-designed, it's just one study. Science needs replication. And remember, collagen supplements aren't regulated like drugs, so purity can vary. I'd stick to whole foods if possible. But if you do buy, look for third-party testing.
