DIY Creatine Gummies - They Turned Out Like Rubber!!! Help!
Hey all, I'm trying to make my own creatine gummies at home using gelatin and some flavoring. I followed a basic recipe (1/2 cup water, 1 tbsp gelatin, let it bloom, then add 5g creatine and some juice). But they came out like gummy bears that've been in the sun for a week - super chewy and rubbery! I suspect I used too much gelatin or didn't mix enough. Anyone got tips for a better texture? Also, do you think adding citric acid would help? #creatine #gummies #diy
Hey Steve! I've been there. My first batch was like chewing on a tire. But I found that using agar instead of gelatin gives a nicer texture. Also, you gotta make sure to mix thoroughly and not overhydrate the gelatin. I usually do 1 cup liquid, 2 tbsp gelatin powder, and bloom in cold water for 5 min before heating gently. Then add creatine after it cools a bit. And yeah, a little citric acid adds zing and helps preserve. Keep at it!
Yep, rubbery is classic for too much gelatin. Also, if you use juice with enzymes like pineapple or kiwi, it can break down gelatin. Stick to berry juices. And don't forget to let them set in the fridge for a good 2+ hours. I've also added a bit of elderberry powder for a nice flavor. They're worth it - my joints thank me.
Good tips! I think I didn't bloom long enough either. I used hot water so maybe the gelatin didn't come out right. I'll try the agar method next time. Ursula, how much agar do you use? And Oscar, thanks for the juice tip - I used pineapple! That explains a lot 😅. I'll post an update when I try again!
For agar, I use about 2 tsp agar powder per 1 cup liquid. You have to boil it for a minute to activate, unlike gelatin. But the gummies have a firmer, more 'snappy' texture - I like 'em better. Good luck Steve, let us know!
