Just read a study on psyllium husk in gummies – is this legit or Big Fiber propaganda?
Hey everyone, I came across this study (PMID: 34567890) about psyllium husk fiber gummies and their effect on gut health. The results seemed pretty positive – increased regularity, better microbiome diversity. But I'm always skeptical of industry-funded research. What do you all think? I skimmed the abstract. The sample size was only 40 people, which is small. And they didn't specify if the gummies were organic or had any additives. I'd want to see a larger, independent study before trusting it. We use psyllium powder in smoothies at home – cheaper and no mystery ingredients.
I've tried fiber gummies before but they gave me terrible gas. LOL. This study might be onto something though – I noticed a difference in my digestion when I added more soluble fiber. But I agree with @EcoEllen346, the sample size is tiny. Also, who funded it? If it's a gummy company, I'd take it with a grain of salt.
Fiber gummies are usually loaded with sugar or sugar alcohols. On keto, that's a no-go. I get my fiber from chia and flax. This study doesn't change my mind – probably just another attempt to sell more processed supplements. Stick to whole foods if you can.
Thanks for the input, everyone. I didn't see the funding source mentioned – I'll dig deeper. @XenonX445, I hear you on the sugar, but some brands use stevia. Still, I'm leaning towards just increasing my veggie intake. Maybe I'll try psyllium powder instead.
