THREAD: My toddler thinks gummy vitamins are candy - hilarious but concerning!Started by OP

Hey everyone, need to share this funny/scary moment from yesterday. My 4-year-old found the bottle of kids' multivitamin gummies and thought they were 'special candy.' He ate like 5 before I caught him! He kept saying 'yummy rainbows' (they're the colorful ones). Thank goodness they're safe in small extra doses, but now he keeps asking for 'vitamin candy' at breakfast instead of his usual chewable. Anyone else deal with this? How do you make sure kids know they're medicine, not treats?

LOL, 'yummy rainbows' is adorable! But yeah, totally get the concern. My husband did something similar once - he thought my fancy artisanal fruit gummies were snacks and ate half the bag. They were actually my fiber supplements! Awkward bathroom times ensued... Maybe try a different brand? Some have more 'medical' flavors like berry-medicine taste instead of straight-up candy. Or hide them in a locked cabinet, treat them like any other med.

First, glad your kid is okay! This is why I only buy vegan gummy vitamins - they often have clearer labeling and less artificial junk that might appeal to kids like candy. Many use pectin instead of gelatin, which gives a slightly different texture that's less 'candy-like.' Have you checked if yours are vegan? Might be a good switch. Also, try involving your child in the routine - explain they're 'helper gummies' for strong bones, not treats. Education works wonders!

Ugh, this is why I advocate for sugar-free options! Many kids' gummies are loaded with sugar or corn syrup, making them basically candy with vitamins. No wonder they get confused. Look for stevia or monk fruit sweetened ones - they taste different enough that kids won't binge them. My niece refused her gummies because she said they were 'too healthy tasting' (lol), but at least she won't overdose! Check the labels, OP. If it has sugar as a top ingredient, it's part of the problem.

Great topic! As a gummy enthusiast, I've seen this a lot. A few tips: 1) Store them with other medicines, visibly separate from snacks. 2) Use a weekly pill organizer so you control the dose. 3) Consider gummies with more 'adult' shapes (like stars or animals) rather than bears, which scream 'candy.' Also, some brands add a slight chalky texture to distinguish them - might help! Personally, I take 8 different gummy supplements daily and my dog once got into my B12... that was a vet trip. Stay vigilant!
