Help! My Omega-3 Gummies Turned Hard and White - Safe to Eat?
Hey everyone, I bought a new bottle of omega-3 gummies and left them in my car for a day (oops). Now they're all stuck together and have a white powdery coating. They smell fine, but I'm worried they might be bad. Are they still safe to eat? Anyone else had this happen?
That's just sugar bloom, dude! Happens when they get warm and then cool. Happens with gummy bears all the time. They're fine to eat, just might be a bit crunchy on the outside. I've eaten plenty like that, no problems. But if they're rock hard and you can't bite them, maybe not fun, but still safe.
I've had that happen with my vitamins too! I was scared to give them to my grandkids. But I looked it up and it's usually just sugar or gelatin crystallizing. Should be okay, but if you're worried, you can always return them. The texture might be off, though. Better to be safe with anything that's for health, you know?
From a scientific perspective, sugar bloom is a physical change, not a chemical one, so the omega-3s should remain intact. However, if they've been exposed to high heat for a long time, the oils could oxidize and turn rancid. Check for any rancid smell (like old fish). If they smell okay, they are likely fine. But if they taste off or have a weird aftertaste, I'd toss them. Also, check the expiration date and store them properly per the bottle.
Thanks all! I gave them a sniff - no fishy smell. I'll try one and see if it tastes normal. If it's gross, I'll just get a new bottle and store them in the fridge this time.
