THREAD: My Omega-3 gummies look weird - are they still safe to eat?Started by OP

Hey everyone, hoping for some advice. I bought these omega-3 gummy supplements a few months ago and they've been sitting in my kitchen cabinet. I opened the bottle today and noticed they've changed color - they're way darker than when I bought them, and some are kind of hard and stuck together. A couple have this white powdery stuff on them too. Are these still safe to take or should I toss them? I don't want to waste them if they're fine, but also don't want to get sick!

Oh wow, that sounds like some interesting natural chemistry happening! As someone who photographs nature, I've seen similar changes in organic materials when exposed to moisture and temperature fluctuations. The white powder is probably sugar bloom - happens when sugar crystals form on the surface due to humidity changes. The color darkening could be oxidation of the ingredients. While it might not be harmful, the omega-3s might have degraded. I'd recommend storing them in a cool, dry place next time. Maybe take a photo before you toss them? Could make for an interesting texture study!

I've had this happen with my fasting supplements too! When I'm doing my 16:8 intermittent fasting, I keep my gummies in different spots depending on the time of day. The ones in my car during summer got all melty and weird. Honestly, if they're hard and discolored, the nutrients are probably compromised anyway. I'd say toss them and get fresh ones - not worth the risk when you're trying to optimize health with fasting. Plus, if they taste off, it'll just make your fasting window more miserable!

Tech guy here - think of your gummies like electronics! Temperature and humidity are the enemies. The sticking together is probably from getting warm, then cooling down. The hardness suggests moisture loss. I use silica gel packets in my supplement containers (like the ones that come with new gadgets) to control humidity. As for safety... if they don't smell rancid and there's no mold, they're PROBABLY okay but might not be effective. That said, I'd error on the side of caution and replace them. Maybe invest in a small humidity monitor for your supplement storage area? They're pretty cheap on Amazon.
