THREAD: My toddler thinks my omega-3 gummies are candy - help!Started by OP

So my 4-year-old found my bottle of omega-3 gummies yesterday and thought they were 'special candy.' He ate like 5 before I caught him! No harm done (I checked with poison control), but now he keeps asking for 'fishy candy' and refuses to eat his actual vitamins because they're 'not as good.' Anyone else deal with this? My husband just laughs and says we should get him the gummies too, but I'm worried about creating bad habits.

See, this is exactly why I'm skeptical about these supplements. They're literally designed to look and taste like candy! No wonder kids get confused. Honestly, you're better off getting omega-3 from actual food sources like salmon or walnuts. At least then there's no confusion about what's food and what's medicine. Plus, who knows what's really in those gummies - probably more sugar than fish oil!

LOL my wife did something similar with my collagen gummies! I've actually started making my own omega-3 gummies at home - much easier to control what goes in them. You could try making some with a little less sweetener so they're not quite as candy-like? I use gelatin, fish oil, and just a touch of honey. My kids actually like them better than the store-bought ones, and I know exactly what's in them. Happy to share my recipe if you want!

This is why I stick to whole foods on my paleo diet. Our ancestors didn't need fish oil gummies - they ate the actual fish! If you're worried about omega-3s, try giving your kid some wild-caught salmon or sardines. The texture might take some getting used to, but it's real food. Those gummies are just processed junk dressed up as health food. No offense to OP - I get the convenience factor, but nature already perfected the delivery system.

First of all, fish oil is cruel and unnecessary! There are plenty of vegan omega-3 sources that won't confuse your child. Try algae-based supplements - they come in liquid form that you can mix into smoothies. Or ground flax seeds in oatmeal! As for the candy confusion, maybe use it as a teaching moment about what's actually healthy vs. what just tastes good. We need to educate the next generation to make compassionate choices.
