THREAD: My prenatal gummies changed color and got hard - are they still safe?Started by OP

Hey everyone, hoping for some advice. I've been taking these prenatal gummies for about 2 months now, and I just opened a new bottle yesterday. They're usually soft and chewy, but these ones are kinda hard and have some white spots on them. Also they're sticking together in the bottle. Are they still safe to take? I'm 14 weeks pregnant so I'm being extra careful. Thanks!

OP, I've seen this before! Been taking gummy supplements for years. The white spots are probably sugar bloom - happens when moisture gets in or they're stored in humid conditions. The hardening is usually from exposure to air. They're PROBABLY still safe chemically, but the texture might be off. Check the expiration date first. If it's not expired, they should be fine, but if you're worried, contact the manufacturer. I had this with some vitamin C gummies last year and they were okay.

RhinoRich is right about the sugar bloom! As someone who cooks a lot, I see this with candy too. The sticking together happens when they get warm then cool down - like if they were in a hot delivery truck. The nutrients should still be there, but the texture will be weird. If they smell normal (not rancid) and aren't expired, they're likely safe. But with pregnancy, maybe err on the side of caution? Can you get a replacement bottle?

Also OP - quick tip from my kitchen experience: store your next bottle in a cool, dry place, NOT in the bathroom or near the stove. Humidity and heat are the enemies of gummies! And keep the lid tightly closed. If you decide to use these current ones, maybe try breaking one open to see if the inside looks normal before taking them regularly.
