THREAD: DIY Sea Moss Gummies Disaster - Need Recipe Help!Started by OP

Hey everyone, I tried making sea moss gummies at home using gelatin and some vitamin C powder I had. Followed a basic recipe online but they came out super rubbery and wouldn't set properly. Anyone have a foolproof recipe or tips? I'm using agar agar as a vegetarian option next time but worried about the same issue. Help!

OP, you gotta stick with gelatin if you want that classic gummy texture. Agar agar is too finicky for beginners. My grandma's recipe uses 1 tbsp gelatin per cup of liquid, dissolved slowly on low heat. Don't rush it! Also, make sure your vitamin powders are fully dissolved before adding to the mix. What temp did you heat it to?

According to my research, agar agar requires boiling for 2-5 minutes to activate properly, unlike gelatin which just needs warming. Also, vitamin C powder can degrade at high temperatures - studies show it's best added after cooling slightly. I have a PDF from a food science journal about gummy supplement stability if anyone wants me to share it. OP, what was your liquid-to-gel ratio?

Oh dear, be careful with homemade supplements! My grandson tried making vitamin gummies last year and they molded after 3 days. Are you adding any preservatives? Store-bought ones have proper stabilizers. Maybe just buy the sea moss gummies from that reputable brand I saw at Whole Foods - safer for the family!

Thanks all! @VitalVince206 I heated to about 160°F before pouring. @HolisticHolly803 I used 2 tsp agar to 1 cup sea moss gel - maybe that was off? And @HolisticHolly718 I did add a little lemon juice as natural preservative but now worried about shelf life. Might try Vince's gelatin method first before giving up!
