THREAD: My sleep gummies look weird - are they still safe to take?Started by OP

Hey everyone, I've been using these melatonin sleep gummies for a few months now and they've been great. But I just opened a new bottle and noticed something off. Some of them have changed color - they're kinda faded or have white spots on them. A few are also sticking together and feel harder than usual. They're not expired yet, but I'm worried. Has anyone else experienced this? Are they still safe to eat?

Oh wow, this takes me back! I remember when gummy vitamins first came out in the early 2000s - they were such a game-changer from those chalky pills. But yeah, I've seen this happen before. The white spots are probably just sugar bloom - happens when they get exposed to humidity. The sticking together thing is common too if they get warm. As long as they don't smell weird or have mold, they're probably fine. But trust your gut - if they seem off, maybe skip them.

I actually use a humidity sensor in my supplement cabinet (yes, I'm that person lol). Gummies are super sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. The hardening and color changes could mean they absorbed moisture then dried out, or vice versa. Not necessarily unsafe, but the texture might be unpleasant. Pro tip: store them with those silica gel packets tech gadgets come with! If you're really concerned, contact the manufacturer - they might send you a replacement bottle.

I've been taking sleep gummies since they first hit the market. Early versions had way more issues with texture changes. Modern ones are better, but still not perfect. The color fading could be from light exposure - are you storing them in a clear container? As for safety: if they're within expiration and you don't see actual mold, they're likely okay. But the melatonin potency might be affected if they've degraded. Might want to try a half dose first to see if they still work.

From a cooking perspective, gummies are basically gelatin, sugar, and flavoring. The texture changes you're describing sound like crystallization or moisture migration - similar to what happens with homemade candies. The white spots are definitely sugar bloom. Safety-wise, unless there's visible microbial growth (fuzzy spots), they're probably fine to consume. But the texture might be gritty or hard. If you're making your own sleep supplements someday, add a bit of corn syrup to prevent crystallization!
