THREAD: Traveling with gummy vitamins - do they melt? TSA rules?Started by HubermanHopeful309

Hey folks, heading to a fitness retreat in Costa Rica next week and need to bring my daily stack - including my gummy multivitamins and omega-3 softgels. Worried about the heat during travel. Do these things melt in checked luggage? Also what's the TSA deal with supplements - do they count them as liquids? Any pro tips from fellow travelers?

OMG YES they can melt! Learned this the hard way on a road trip to Disney last summer. Left my kids' gummy vitamins in the car while we checked in, came back to a sticky mess in the bottle. For air travel, I always carry them in my carry-on now - TSA doesn't care about vitamins as long as they're not liquid gels over 3.4oz. Pro tip: put them in a ziplock just in case they get soft, and maybe toss in one of those silica gel packets from shoe boxes to absorb moisture!

Student budget hack here - I travel by bus a lot between home and campus. Gummies definitely get weird in heat. I switched to taking my vitamins right before trips instead of during, but if you need them daily, maybe get one of those insulated lunch bags? The cheap ones from dollar stores work. Also, softgels are way more stable than gummies in heat in my experience - they don't melt, just might get a bit soft.

As someone who experiments in the kitchen, I can confirm gummies start losing shape around 85°F. For hiking trips, I put mine in a small thermos with an ice pack - works like a charm! TSA-wise, I've flown with both gummies and softgels in my carry-on dozens of times, never had an issue. They're considered solid supplements. Just make sure the container is clearly labeled if you're using a pill organizer instead of original packaging.
