Uh oh, my gummies are sticky and hard! Safe to eat?
Hey everyone! I bought a big jar of my favorite gummy vitamins a few months ago, but I just opened it and they've changed. The outside is kind of hard and they're all stuck together in a blob. They also look a bit more translucent? I'm guessing it's because of the heat? Are they still safe to eat or should I toss them? Any advice?
Oh no! That's normal if they've been exposed to moisture or temperature changes. The hardening could be sugar bloom or the gelatin breaking down. I usually keep mine in the fridge, but even then they can get weird. Safety-wise, they're probably okay, but the texture might be off. I'd say if they don't smell weird or have any mold, you can still eat them, but maybe not all at once. If they're too hard, you could try warming them slightly? Just not in the microwave, that'll melt them. 😅
I've seen this happen with my fish oil softgels when they get too warm. It's the gelatin getting soft and then rehardening. Not harmful, but the potency might be lower if they were exposed to heat for too long. For gummies, I'd check the expiry date. If they're still within date and no funky smell, they're fine. But if they taste off, trust your gut. I once ate some that had gone all grainy and they were fine, just not pleasant. Better safe than sorry though, maybe contact the company?
Ah, the classic 'gummy blob'! Reminds me of the fruit snacks we had as kids that would always stick together in the lunchbox. My mom would just tell us to break them apart. I'd say they're safe, but if you're worried about the vitamins being degraded, you could always use them in smoothies or something. Or just have a little with water. Honestly, the texture change is just the ingredients doing their thing. You're probably fine. Just keep them in a cool, dry place next time.
