THREAD: My toddler thinks vitamin C gummies are candy - hilarious (and slightly concerning) story!Started by BioBob758

Hey everyone, had to share this one. My 4-year-old found the bottle of vitamin C gummies I keep on the kitchen counter yesterday. I turned around for TWO SECONDS to check the oven, and when I looked back he had the bottle open and was happily munching away saying 'yummy orange candies!' I managed to get them away before he had too many, but now he keeps asking for 'the special candy' every time he sees me in the kitchen. Anyone else deal with this? They do look and taste like candy, I get it!

Oh Bob, I feel you! My 6-year-old went through a phase where she REFUSED to take her vitamins because she said the texture was 'too squishy and weird.' She'd make this dramatic face like I was poisoning her. We tried different brands until we found one with a firmer chew she tolerates. Maybe try keeping them higher up? I keep ours in a locked cabinet now after a similar incident with my husband who thought they were 'adult gummies' (if you catch my drift). Safety first!

Interesting scenario. Have you considered making your own? You could control the sugar content and add functional ingredients like zinc or elderberry. I've been biohacking my supplement routine with DIY gummies using grass-fed gelatin and acerola cherry powder for natural vitamin C. Less appealing to kids when they're not loaded with artificial flavors. What's the ascorbic acid content in your current brand? Might be worth checking if your little one actually consumed a concerning dose.

Mila - a locked cabinet is smart! My husband suggested the same thing after I told him. Vince - making my own sounds cool but honestly between my cooking experiments and parenting, I barely have time to sleep! The brand I use has 250mg per gummy, and he only got maybe 2 before I caught him. Pediatrician said he'd be fine but to keep them out of reach (obviously). Maybe I'll look into less candy-like options though.

Vince always coming in with the high-tech solutions lol! Bob, glad your little one is okay. We use the 'special grown-up medicine' explanation with our kids and it works pretty well. Also, pro tip: give them with a meal instead of as a treat. Breaks the candy association. And yes to less appealing options - there are chewable tablets that taste okay but definitely don't scream 'candy' like gummies do!
