THREAD: New study on Vitamin C gummies - legit science or biased marketing?Started by GreenGreg567

Hey everyone, just came across this article summarizing a recent study (PMID: 12345678) about ascorbic acid in gummy form. It claims gummy Vitamin C has 95% bioavailability compared to pills. Sounds too good to be true? Link: healthnews.com/vitamin-c-gummies-study
I've been taking these gummies for my meditation practice (helps with stress they say) but now I'm wondering if I'm just eating candy. What do you all think?

Med student here. I looked up the actual study. First red flag: it was funded by a gummy supplement company. The methodology seems okay on surface - randomized controlled trial with 100 participants - but they only measured blood levels for 24 hours. Vitamin C has variable absorption based on dose timing and gut health.
Also, gummies often have added sugars that can affect results. The 95% claim is probably inflated - most quality studies show 70-85% absorption for well-formulated supplements. Not terrible, but not miraculous either.

From my fitness coaching experience: clients LOVE gummies for compliance (they actually take them!), but you gotta check the sugar content. Some have like 3-4g per serving!
That study might have a bias, but honestly if it gets people taking their Vitamin C consistently, that's a win. I recommend gummies to clients who struggle with pills, but always say: "whole foods first, supplements second." Oranges anyone? ๐

OMG I LIVE for this discussion! ๐ฌ I've tried 14 different Vitamin C gummy brands (yes I keep a spreadsheet). The study might be biased BUT anecdotally: I stopped getting winter colds when I switched to gummies from tablets. Could be placebo, could be better compliance like Wendy said.
Pro tip: look for gummies with rose hips or acerola cherry - natural Vit C sources! And check for gelatin vs pectin if you're veggie. The sugar thing is real though - I found one brand with only 1g stevia-sweetened!
