THREAD: Help! My homemade Vitamin D gummies turned into a sticky mess - recipe tips needed!Started by OP

Hey everyone, I tried making my own vitamin D gummies at home to save money and reduce plastic waste. I used gelatin, some vitamin D powder I bought online, and a little honey for sweetness. But they came out super sticky and wouldn't set properly - more like vitamin D goo than gummies! Has anyone successfully made these at home? What am I doing wrong with the ratios? Should I be using agar instead of gelatin?

Fascinating experiment! The issue is likely with your gelatin-to-liquid ratio or temperature control. Gelatin sets at specific concentrations (typically 2-3% by weight in the total mixture) and requires proper blooming (soaking in cold liquid first) and careful heating (don't boil!). Vitamin D is fat-soluble - are you using a water-soluble form? If not, you'll need an emulsifier like lecithin. Agar sets at higher temperatures and might be more forgiving for beginners. What was your exact recipe in grams?

omg i tried this too after that podcast episode about sunlight and supplementation! mine came out weirdly rubbery but at least they held shape. i found adding a tiny bit of citrus juice (like lemon) helped with texture? also maybe try using a silicone mold - my first batch stuck to everything! are you taking them for mood support or immune function? i notice such a difference in my morning yoga flow when i'm consistent with D3

Love that you're DIYing to reduce packaging! ♻️ Gelatin is animal-based though - have you considered agar or pectin from fruit? I use agar for my gummies and they set beautifully. Also, where did you source your vitamin powder? Make sure it's from an ethical supplier. For sweetness, local honey or maple syrup works better than refined sugar. My tip: pour the mixture thinner than you think - they firm up more as they dry!

Thanks all! @TeaTina592 I didn't measure exactly (oops) just winged it with a packet of gelatin and about a cup of water. The vitamin powder says 'cholecalciferol' - is that water soluble? @HubermanHopeful834 yes for immune support mostly! @PeakPaula good point about gelatin - I'll try agar next batch. The powder is from a 'natural supplements' site but I should check their sourcing. Maybe I'll try the citrus juice trick too!
