THREAD: My toddler thinks vitamin D gummies are candy - help!Started by YogaYara764

Okay, I need to vent and get advice! My 4-year-old discovered my vitamin D gummies yesterday and thought they were special candy. He ate like 5 before I caught him (they're the orange-flavored ones). I freaked out and called poison control - they said he'd be fine since it's just vitamin D, but now he keeps asking for 'orange candy' and refuses to eat his actual gummy vitamins because they're 'not the good ones.' Anyone else deal with this? How do I explain the difference to a preschooler?

Oh my gosh, Yara, this is SO common! First, deep breaths - the poison control folks are right, vitamin D is water-soluble so excess gets flushed out. But the psychology here is key! Kids associate gummies with treats. My tip: get a locking supplement container (they sell cute ones on Amazon) and keep ALL gummies in it. For explaining, I tell my followers to use simple language like 'mommy/daddy vitamins help grown-ups, kid vitamins help kids' bodies grow strong.' Maybe try a different brand for him? Some have fun shapes that might distract from the 'orange candy' memory!

lol my wife did something similar with my running supplements! She thought my electrolyte gummies were fancy candy and ate half the jar. Now she complains my actual candy stash is 'inferior.' For kids though - my niece went through a phase where she hated the texture of any gummy that wasn't perfect. Would only eat the ones that weren't stuck together. Maybe try a different texture? Some brands are softer than others. Also, marathon training means I take a ton of supplements - I keep mine on a high shelf in a clearly labeled 'DAD'S STUFF' container. Works for kids and spouses!

Thanks both! GummyGuru - ordering a locking container now, that's genius. And Jack, the texture thing is real! He'll sometimes reject a gummy if it's too 'chewy' or not chewy enough. Maybe I need to sample different brands with him. Do either of you have favorite kid-friendly vitamin D gummies? Preferably ones that don't look/taste like MY supplements haha. Also considering just switching to drops for myself to avoid the confusion entirely.

Yara, I love the drops idea for you! For kids, I recommend the ones with animal shapes - it creates a different category in their brain than 'round orange candy.' The brand I partner with has dinosaur-shaped D3 gummies that are a hit. Texture-wise, they're consistently firm but not sticky. And Jack's 'DAD'S STUFF' container strategy is gold - visual cues work wonders! Remember to praise him when he takes HIS vitamins correctly too. Positive reinforcement > power struggles. Keep us updated!
