My Vitamin D gummies changed color and got hard – are they still safe?
Hey all! I bought a bottle of Vitamin D gummies a couple months ago, and when I opened them today, they've changed color (from yellow to orange-ish) and they're hard as rocks. Some even have a white coating on them. I know gummies can expire, but these are well within the date. Are they still safe to eat? They taste a bit off, not like before. 😕
Hi! That sounds like sugar bloom and drying out. The gummies have lost moisture, which can cause them to harden and the sugar to crystallize on the surface (the white stuff). It's not necessarily harmful, but the texture and taste will be different. As for safety, they're likely okay if they didn't get contaminated, but if they taste 'off', I'd toss them. You can also check for any mold – if you see any, definitely don't eat them. Also, moisture can make them stick together, which you mentioned? If they're stuck, and you see any moisture or sliminess, that could be a sign of spoilage. I'd err on the side of caution.
I've had that happen with my gummy vitamins too. Usually it's from not sealing the bottle tight enough or storing them in a warm place. They're probably still safe, but they might be less potent. If they're too hard to chew, you could chop them up and put them in yogurt or smoothie, but honestly, if they taste bad, I'd just buy a new bottle. It's not worth the risk.
As a guy who cares about flavor, I'd say if they taste off, that's a dealbreaker. Gummies are supposed to be enjoyable, not a chore. The color change could be due to exposure to light or heat – that might degrade the vitamins too. I'd check if the bottle is clear or if you left them in a sunny spot. Bottom line: safe? Probably. But why settle for subpar? Get fresh ones and keep them in a cool, dark place.
Oh gosh, I've been there! With kids, I forget to close the lid properly and they end up like that. I usually give them the old 'sniff test' – if they smell okay and don't have any weird spots, I'll let the kids have them, but I always cut them into smaller pieces because they're so hard my little one could choke. But if they're way off, I just order a new batch. It's not worth a trip to the ER! 😅
